The last two days of tracking for electric guitar are being done at my brothers house, in his closet/bathroom to be more precise. As the house we have been recording in is not properly grounded, using amplifiers is not only noisy, but quite dangerous. Not surprisingly, I have been more concerned with the album's noise floor than my own safety. On the upside, it gave me the chance to experiment with chamber reverb (or echo, rather), which is a fancy way of saying that I put a mic in the shower.

Our friend Christopher(who has taken most of the photos on this blog) just started a monthly photo club.

"What the f is that?"

First of all, take it easy. He prints, mattes, numbers, and signs five of the months chosen photograph. The photos are really lovely, and they will never be printed again(good for you jealous types). They are 25 dollars a print, and make you happy like Valium.

The prospect of rerecording sections of an album is always a bit grating, but in some instances it is incredibly exciting. Thanks to Classic Pianos of Portland we had the opportunity to work with a Bosendorfer Grand Piano. The day felt like a field trip to Drake's Well. That's a good thing, yes.

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds

I read somewhere that Hunter S. Thompson used to type his favorite novels out just to see how it felt to write that well. It's in this spirit that I submit my rendition of Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.

After playing through it a few times on Jack's Lowery organ I found the piano was slightly less abrasive to my ear. Using a handheld cassette recorder fit only for archaic reporters, and thrift stores shelves I recorded a few takes of piano and singing. I wasn't recording the song really, the recorder is just a great way for a quick critique. I enjoyed how the song sounded when I played it back using a function that speeds everything up (a poor man's crack at the original's sound).

It became an experiment not unlike Free as a Bird where the surviving Beatles and Jeff Lynn(ELO) completed an old John Lennon demo for Anthology. I hope you like it.

I spent the morning exploring the unpredictable migratory patterns of dishes in my apartment. Holes in my memory and absentmindedness account for most of the magic and mystery in my life.

As the album continues to come together, we are taking greater care documenting the process. Try as we might to capture every moment of value on film, paper, or tape it becomes more and more apparent how impossible that endeavor is.

The gripe you will mostly hear from artists is that they are misunderstood, when really, every one of us spends our lives being misunderstood and simultaneously misinterpreting everything. More and more it has become my M.O. to embrace this inevitability. This comes as a great comfort when I contemplate the details we've missed.
